RC: What is your biggest "pet peeve”?
SS: People who mispronounce words. I.e. kindygarten, acrosst, etc.
RC: When did you learn how to sew and what has been the most rewarding piece that you have created?
SS: I learned from my Mother when I was five years old. She gave me dish towels to learn how to embroidery on. I then graduated to the sewing machine at eight years old.
RC: So, you learn't at 8 years old?
SS: Did I say that?!! (Laughing) The most rewarding would have to be about three years ago, when Chevron was real big, I sold about 300 - 400 Chevron pillows that year. It was a very exciting time. I also re-cover furniture.
RC: What do you collect?
SS: I'm trying really hard not to. I used to be an avid collector of Spode Blue Room China. I had 100's of pieces. I've sold everything that I have had except one cup that is my husbands. I've indulged my children in M&M's, Coca Cola, and Unicorn collections. Right now, no serious collection.
RC: Five Things you can't live without:
SS: 1. Coffee- I can't get started without it.
2. Channel #5 - It’s been my perfume since I was 18 and I've never changed.
3. Ice Cream - I have a daily addiction.
4. I could not live without my sewing machine.
5. Mascara - I will not start my day without mascara.
RC: Besides Sewing, what would you say your other best talent would be?
SS: I like to bake and I make one of the best pie crusts in the world. I make real good pies and have been since I was five. (We wouldn't know that Susan.. pecan, apple or pumpkin.)
RC: Any advice for new dealers?
SS: Hang in there! (Laughing) Come in often, keep your booth interesting, and buy what you love and price it competitively.
RC: Whenever you're having a bad day, what is the best thing you can do to help cheer yourself up?
SS: I come to River City Trading Post. I didn't just make that up. It's for real. This is my "Happy Place".
RC: Have you seen anything funny at Garage Sales?
SS: I am not a big garage sale person. But I have seen something funny. I do thrift stores. I bought a metal bird figurine that was funny looking. That's not a good answer because it wasn't really funny. (laughing)
RC: What do you miss about California?
SS: The weather. They have really good weather. I do not do well with the brutal Summers here. I miss the beach, palm trees, and my friends.
RC: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
SS: Dick Van Dyke. That really dates me. (laughing) I also have met John Wayne's son at a party. He was very cute, very nice and friendly. Dick Van Dyke and I just said "Hello".
RC: What is your favorite thing about River City?
SS: The people, the dealers and the people that work here. I like buying from River City and selling. I really like the people that I've gotten to know here.
